GEMOLOGY
Opal is a beautiful natural gemstone and is the result of seasonal rains that drench dry grounds. The showers soak deep into ancient underground rock, carrying dissolved silica (a compound of silicon and oxygen) downward. During the dry periods, most of the water evaporates leaving solid deposits of silica in the cracks and between layers of underground sedimentary rock. These silica deposits form opal. Opal comes in two forms. Precious opal, which displays play-of-colour, and common opal which does not. Play-of-colour is the unique display of flashing rainbow colours we have come to recognise from precious opals. Opals come in numerous colours, but there are 5 main types. White Opal, which is translucent to semi-translucent with a white or grey background. Black Opal, which is translucent to opaque and has a black or dark background. Crystal or Water Opal, which is transparent to semi-transparent and shows exceptional play-of-colour, over a clear background. Boulder Opal is translucent to opaque with play-of-colour against a light to dark background and contains fragments of host rock, called matrix. Fire opal is the final type and can be transparent to translucent, with brown, yellow, orange, or red body colour. This type of opal does not often show play-of-colour and can also be referred to as the ‘Mexican Opal.’ Opals can also come in different grades, determined by their cut, colour and clarity.
