How to Wear RingsGEMOLOGY
Diamond simulants are laboratory-made diamonds, usually created from ceramics. They will often be of a more perfect cut, colour and clarity than the real deal. Unlike cubic zirconia, diamond simulants are internally flawless.
Ruby and sapphire simulants do not necessarily share the same properties as the stone they mimic. These stones simply imitate the colour and this can be done in a lab using a number of different minerals and physical and chemical processes. Most commonly, synthetic spinel is used to mimic a variety of different stones.
Topaz is naturally a colourless stone, however, it can be treated with high-energy electron or gamma radiation and then heated to produce a variety of stunning blue hues. Today, it is the variation of this very procedure which yields topaz in a wide range of blue colours, the most popular being London Blue and Swiss Blue. The radiation treatment is safe. The stones are held in a secure facility after treatment and monitored until their residual radiation declines to a level that is safe for use in jewellery.
